RWYC Adult Squad 2018

The Royal Windermere Yacht Club (RWYC) set up an ‘Adult Training Squad’ in April 2015 to complement the existing Youth Squad by providing assistance to adult sailors. We now plan to expand and formalise this training scheme.

With the help of our registered charity the RWYC Sailing Academy** we are hoping to raise funds and acquire purpose-built training boats in the form of two Laser Bahias; this will add to the three RS Fevas already purchased by the Academy and will allow us to provide high quality adult training. The Bahias will also allow our Juniors to progress to sailing larger boats and eventually to join our dinghy racing programme. Ultimately, we are hoping to offer RYA courses to adults.

The Adult Squad helps novice and inexperienced adult sailors learn more effective sailing, both for crewing for others and more especially for helming their own boats. Basic racing skills are also covered, with practice starts and mini-races held on a regular basis.

The Squad is supported by existing Club members on a volunteer basis. The Squad meets on two days each week during the sailing season: Saturdays 10am – 12noon and Sundays 10am – 12noon.

Saturday Sessions take place in conjunction with the Saturday Youth Squad session and are intended primarily for Squad members who wish to have sailing taster sessions and wish to experience and learn the basics of sailing. Squad Members will be taken sailing in Club boats with experienced Club sailors.

Sunday Sessions are intended to be for slightly more advanced sailors, those wishing to improve their skills in their own boats or to make use of the Club boats under supervision. There will be an emphasis on race training, leading to members taking part in Club activities. It is hoped that we can accommodate a facility for juniors to upgrade from Youth Squad towards RWYC race involvement thereby reducing ‘drop outs’ from our training programs.

Squad members can attend on either day, dependant on experience. When sailing on Saturday the Squad sails in the vicinity of the Youth Squad to take advantage of the escort facilities on the water but is not wholly reliant on those facilities; a volunteer dory/motor boat is also provided when possible. On Sunday escort facilities will be provided by volunteers. There will be opportunities for Club members who have gained their Powerboat Level 2 Certificate to make use of, and practice, their skills by volunteering for Adult Squad escort support.

Membership and participation does not lead to any ‘levels’ or ‘certificates’ at the moment.

The Adult Squad is open to existing members of the Club and is provided free of charge by volunteers. Participation can be extended to parents of junior squad members and non-members by means of a registration fee.

Volunteers are requested from ALL fleets of the Club!! You just have to be willing to pass on your sailing skills to others. Please email Nigel Hutchinson (Squad Leader) on  [email protected]
