RWYC Major Incident Plan

Revised RWYC Major Incident Plan (18 March 2026):

 

  1. A Major Incident is any event where there is loss of life, a serious injury, or there is substantial damage to property and/or the environment. For example:
  • An incident leading to a fatality, serious injury or hospitalisation;
  • Other circumstances where people might be at serious risk of harm;
  • Incidents involving the Emergency Services etc
  • Major damage to, or sinking of vessels or other property;
  • Any incident in which the media are, or may be, involved;

 

  1. Management of the incident scene will be the responsibility of the Race Officer or Instructor or the most capable person at the scene.The main points to consider are:
    1. Protecting the scene from further incidents;
    2. Ensuring that any casualties are being attended to;
    3. Contacting the relevant emergency services (Police, Fire, Ambulance, Coastguard, LakeWardens etc). Use the 999 system;
    4. Gathering any evidence that is available, including the names, addresses and phone numbers of any independent witnesses;
    5. Maintain a written record of key information and actions taken in the incident log;
    6. Retain all equipment involved in the incident, ensuring that nothing is altered;
    7. Protect and ensure the welfare of everyone involved and any witnesses;
    8. Contact a club Officer and update her/him with details of the incident.

 

  1. Once ashore, liaise with relevant Club officer(s), who may have already started to organise a press liaison contact (PLC). The PLC will be the only person to make any public statements to the media etc.
