Cruisers and Flying Fifteens Compete in Royal Windermere Yacht Club’s Autumn Series of Races

Sunshine, blue skies and a brisk breeze brought large numbers of Royal Windermere Yacht Club competitors out in two different classes of races over the past weekend.

First out were the cruisers with a record turnout, competing in their autumn series.  With probably the steadiest wind conditions for some time, ‘Kontiki’ (Julian and Claire Maclaine) soared to victory for the second weekend in a row, taking the prize for the Cruisers’ October series.  Sailing in winds of between 7 and 16 knots, the cruisers were in their element, with stiff competition from ‘Va Voom’ (Trevor Bonson) and ‘Ben-o-II’ (Ted Parker) who finished joint second. ‘Va Va Voom’ was given added kudos for braving last weekend’s gale-force winds with ‘Kontiki’ when others retired!

Meantime, the Flying Fifteens were competing in their Autumn Bowl series of races.  Normally held over four weeks, the Autumn Bowl was raced intensively over 2 weekends when the first two in October were marred by Storm Callum and then by flooding and no wind!

The overall winner of the Autumn Bowl was ‘Pitch Perfect’ (Dave Heron), followed closely in second place by ‘Niffty’ (Nigel Tullett) and ‘Vital Statistix’ (Keith Jamieson) in third.

Both weekends’ races were pretty closely-fought with all three medallists jockeying for position.  In the first pair of races, ‘Pitch Perfect’ (Dave Heron and Chris Ducker) won both, with ‘Vital Statistix’ (Keith Jamieson) coming second in both races, and ‘Factor Fifteen’ (Frank Kelly) in third place in both races.

In the second set of two races, both races were won by ‘Niffty’ (Nigel and Jean Tullett), with ‘Felix Felicis’ (Julian Newman and Amanda Wilson) in second place in both races, and  ‘Pitch Perfect’ (Dave Heron and Pierre Labat) in third place in both races.
