RWYC – RYA Adult Sailing Courses and RWYC Skill Sessions 2019

RWYC is considering offering a programme of formal (RYA courses, fee charged) and informal training (volunteer led sessions, free of charge) for RWYC members and potential members in 2019.  But first we need to know which courses and sessions would appeal to members/potential members, the days and times which would be most popular, and how many are interested in taking part.

Courses and sessions would be open to adult sailors (16+) who have the required experience for the level being taught.

So if you keen to develop your sailing skills please read on and then submit your answers using this form.  Deadline for responses is Friday 7 December 2018 so we have time to review the answers and make plans for the coming season.

RYA Sailing Courses

These courses would be delivered by a qualified RYA Senior Instructor in accordance with the National Sailing Syllabus and on successful completion of the course you would be awarded the appropriate certificate.  Each course requires 16 hours of tuition.  Course costs vary depending on the provider but RYA 2-day courses provided by local sailing schools typically costs c. £125 per person based on a minimum class size of 3 students.  You can start at any level if you have the pre-requisite skills and experience so you can begin at Level 3 or above if that is appropriate.  Courses which RWYC are considering offering include:

  • RYA Level 1 – Start Sailing
  • RYA Level 2 – Basic Skills
  • RYA Level 3 – Better Sailing
  • RYA Seamanship Skills (without coastal option)
  • RYA Sailing with Spinnakers
  • RYA Start Racing

 RWYC Skill Sessions

These sessions would be delivered by a RWYC volunteer either as a one-off session or as a short block of sessions.  The skills sessions are not formal training but offer the opportunity to develop under the watchful eye of an experienced club sailor.

Topics which could be offered include:

  • Introduction to RYWC Club Racing (Theory Session)
  • RWYC Race Start Sequences and Practice Starts
  • Sprint Series Mini-Races
  • GP14 Dinghy Skills Workshop
  • Solo Dinghy Skills Workshop
  • Flying Fifteen Keelboat Skills Workshop
  • Introduction to Spinnakers Workshop (conventional and/or asymmetric)
  • Capsize Recovery Skills Workshop

Or any other relevant topic if there is sufficient interest and we can find a volunteer to lead the session.
