From the Commodore’s Logbook
I am pleased to let you know our club has survived the exceptionally high lake, with water nearly lapping the training room doors at times, many thanks to all who have checked and secured boats.
The club has been busy since my last Logbook extract, but in the clubhouse not on the water. It started with the music evening with entertainment provided by the Ukulele band who played a rousing selection of tunes, which were followed by mince pies and a quiz, many thanks to Marian Newman for arranging it all. This was then quickly followed by our traditional Canapé evening on the last Friday before Christmas when the bar was full and the pool table was laden with plates of canapes members had brought in.
Boxing day once again saw the club full with a delicious carvery served in the dining room, a great family occasion, even with a Children’s table. Finally, the highlight of our social year the New Years eve Party, another excellent spread served in the dining room, followed by music to the small hours supplied by Naomi and the Nerds.

Looking forward we have some great talks and events arranged for the next three months, all the talks are given by members.
On the 8th of January Andrew Smith will tell of his epic adventure cycling across the USA
On the 18th of January, there is a Carvery lunch.
On the 12th of February Louise Latham, will tell us about her life as a professional musician
On the 15th of February, there is a Carvery Lunch, with the threat of a walk before hand.
On the 12th of March Nick Hampson will explain what Trig Points are and how they are the key to OS maps, and navigation.
Saturday 14th March – Club AGM
Sunday 15th of March, there is our Mothers Day Carvery

Eating at the club on Fridays
I have often thought after having a beer in the club on a Friday night I cannot be bothered to cook, and should I have supper at the club. But then thought I don’t want to be Billy No Mates and sit all by myself so go home and cook a Pizza. I then remembered when I lived in London and was a member of the Reform Club they used to have a Club Table in the dining room, where members could sit with whoever turned up. Could this be the solution?
I have asked Zoe to set up a table on Friday nights for 7pm where singles or couples who want to talk to somebody else can sit, this will be named THE CLUB TABLE! Bookings are preferred on a Friday evening, however Zoe will never see us go hungry so do check with her instead of leaving.
We have a new wine selection, by chance I was at the club when Zoe had a meeting with our supplier and they let me join in, sadly no tastings though. I asked nicely and the supplier has given us a few bottles to taste of the new wines, so on Friday January 16th, we will open them at 6pm, and launch the Club Table at 7pm, I will be there hopefully not still as Billy No Mates
Training
We have two shore based opportunities.
An RYA Day Skipper Theory course is being held over two long weekends 9/10/11 & 23/24//25. The price is £350 if you would like to learn about navigation and seamanship why not sign up. We have a couple of spaces left, book with [email protected]
We are hosting an RYA run Race Officer course on the 21st / 22nd of February, this is ideal if you are interested in either running races or understanding how it all works to make you a better competitor. The price is £85 but if you will commit to being Race Officer at the RWYC 3 times in 2026 the club will pay this. If you are interested contact [email protected] and Marion will give you the link to book in directly with the RYA and the discount code for the payment.
Sailing
While most of us have been toasting our toes in front of the fire, congratulations to our few hardy sailors. Our model boat group have been out racing off our Jetties, and a very brave Ed Grey was seen racing his Solo in the Yorkshire Dales Brass Monkey Race and was top Solo.
Spring Wardrobe Clear Outs
Not at the club, but at home. If you have any sailing kit, in good condition that you have grown out of or no longer need, and especially Children`s we could use it for our training team. Please bring to the club and leave in the training room if open, or the office.
Situation Vacant- Bosun
We need a volunteer to help look after the club boats, ideally you will call into the club each week, and amongst other things.
Check the ribs, ensure sponsons inflated, oil levels ok etc
Check the Rib logs, for any issues, fix if you can or work with the Sailing Secretary to arrange repairs
Check for any reported issues with the Club Dinghy`s, repair if you can or work with the Chief Instructor / Sailing Secretary to repair
At beginning and end of the season help with getting the Club Boats ready and putting them away.

I am sure many members will be away Skiing or avoiding the Cumbrian Winter in some other way over the next couple of months, but if you are passing the Club at the weekend, do pop in as it would be great to see you.
