Commodore’s Newsletter June 2022

Dear Members,                                                                                                                    1st June 2022

The Season continues to go well, with plenty of wind during May, providing great sailing for the “Early Season Sailors”.

There have been some notable events during May.  Nigel and Gavin Tullett went up to Holy Loch and came second in the Scottish Flying Fifteen Championships, in a very competitive Fleet.  During early May, the Welsh National Championships were held at Dovey Yacht Club on 7th and 8th May.  Robert Richardson and Ethan Leahy and Harry Frith and John Richardson attended.  They had a great time, with Robert third overall and Harry fifth, in a very competitive Fleet.

Riggy, our Sailing Secretary and Tony Houlihan, competed in the Fred Whitton Challenge.  This is one of the most popular sportives in the United Kingdom and is also famed, as being particularly difficult  and consists of a one hundred and twelve mile ride, around the Lake District, starting at Grasmere and taking in climbs of, Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott, Wrynose and Blea Tarn Passes.  Semi-professional top riders complete this in six hours, but, eleven hours and over, are not uncommon.  Riggy completed his in eight hours and forty minutes and Tony in eleven hours and seventeen minutes.

Training

The Youth Sailing Club goes from strength to strength and the Paddle Board Club is coming along nicely, although, whilst the wind is good for sailing, it is not great for paddle boarding.  Summer Courses, Power Boat, Safety Boat, and Sailing Courses are all progressing well.  Adult Squad is seeing a good take-up on Sunday mornings.

Duty Roster for Safety Boat and Assistant Race Officer

Despite my double reminder in the May Newsletter, we are still struggling to fill the Duty Rosters.  Whether you are a Social Member; sail for fun; or have a yacht moored on the Lake, the Club needs Members to volunteer for these duties. Doing duties on the Safety Boats is a great way to meet Members – both new Members and those who have been Members of the RWYC for many years.

Social News

For sometime, it has been apparent that with the Flag Officers only doing one year terms, the Social Scene can get a bit “lost”.  The Club is going to form a Social Committee, Chaired by the Rear Commodore, in order to get continuity from one year to the next.

The use of the Pool Table is now free for the next three months, so please feel free to use it.

Access to the RWYC Clubhouse and Social Events.

Please see the Club Website for details and/or on the Club Noticeboard, inside the Clubhouse.  In all cases, please contact Zoe to book and confirm attendance.
