Commodore’s February Newsletter
Good afternoon,
I sat down and penned this newsletter on Shrove Tuesday drunk on pancakes, after having just parked in Windermere this afternoon outside Musgrave’s Iron Mongers to go and get a valentine’s card for Catharine for Valentines Day. I was looking in the shop window, when a shiny new frying pan caught my eye, and the thought that it might be more useful than a box of chocolates to her! But after talking to Ian Bertram in the Launderette and the thought of possibly wearing said pan on my head! Just like Ferrari it was back to plan A.
I love February as its only 28days! Which means it is soon March, when I’m back sailing and boating again.
The 17′ fleet is having a big year this year celebrating 120 years, which started with the owners meeting Saturday morning followed by a hatch lunch. Zoe put on a great meal for us all and it was great to catch up with the fleet.
The annual RYA Dinghy show is on the 24th and 25th February it is a long way away, but myself and a few more are attending this year. There is always a lot to look at; new boats, old boats, restored boats, sailing kit, chandlery, show deals/ discounts, plus talks/lectures, plenty of tips and advice available.
West Lancashire Yacht Club is trying to find out if there is enough interest to hold another 24hour race in September. I have replied to them stating that we have not missed one yet, so we will be there with our club GP14.
March sees: –
The refurbishment of the gent’s shower block, this will start at the end of February and will be finished by March 28th. This means that showers will be out of action unfortunately but the changing rooms will still be open. This will see the showers retiled, with a new hot water supply, when complete we should have instant hot water in plentiful supply and not having to constantly press the buttons!
The bar area should be getting new bar tables, these are on order now and we are just waiting for the delivery.
The last of the winter talks;
March 14th – THE TITANIC by Colin Thompson.
Food will be available before the talk at 6:30pm, bookings are a must please.
The talk will commence from 7.30pm in the bar area.
The clubs AGM is to be held on Saturday 16th march at noon
Where we will explain how the club is being run and what we hope to achieve in the coming year.
If you would like to give some input into the running of the club, we are currently looking for an RYA Training Principal to oversee the training at the club and be part of management committee. We also have some vacancies on the operation committee, which oversees the club grounds and premises.
Last month we had some well attended events at the club, one of them being the local RNLI S.O.S. event which raised £500 for the charity.
The club also held the Essential Navigation & Seamanship Course which was run by RWYC member Andrew Smith, all that attended gave great feedback and learnt a lot.
Here is one member’s feedback after that weekend;
“I cannot believe how we packed so much into two days and Andrew kept it interesting right to the end, I learnt a lot and now want to do my coastal skipper course”
Hopefully the weather will get brighter and drier soon, then we can get down to the club to prepare for the season.
