Commodore’s Comms, July 2025

Dear Members,

How on earth did the first half of the sailing season pass by so quickly. Im back refreshed from a week in Majorca where it was, well ,quite warm. !!!  and looking forward to getting back to sailing my Flying Fifteen. Whilst mentioning Flying Fifteens, one of the fleet members Andrew Smith has recently flown to Oregon in the USA to cycle solo across the USA from Astoria in Oregon across to Yorktown, Virginia. Its an incredible adventure, cycling 4500 miles and camping along the way. We won’t  see Andrew now until the October winter series, and I wish hm well, hoping he’s packed plenty of inner tubes and some quality chamois cream! I wanted to thank members for supporting Commodore’s day on June 21st , we had a fantastic day, commencing with a pursuit race and followed by a do it yourself barbecue and a wine, cheese and crisp tasting quiz which seems to have been well received. I’d like to thank Zoe for her help throughout the day and to Steve, Sue  and safety boat crews for officiating for the pursuit race. The weather played ball and there was lots of fun and laughter well into the evening.

So lets turn our attention to July, which  is going to be  a busy sailing and social  month. As well as the usual racing calendar we have the RNLI regatta to look forward to on Saturday 12th July. This is an open event for all classes so please support and get your entries in.The racing will be followed by a family BBQ , £15 p/h which can be booked through Zoe using the usual channels. 

Following hot on the heels of this is the second race week for the 17 fleet, Wednesday 16th to Saturday 19th. Racing will be followed by a grazing platter buffet on Saturday commencing at 5-45 pm . Cost is £14 per person and all are invited to come along. 

The Sunday morning sailing squad are as busy as ever, with lots of interest. They had been working hard to get a team together for the junior 12 hour race at Southport on the 28th June.  Unfortunately with the prospect of a force 6 forecast, it was decided that discretion was the better part of valour, which was a great shame. However all of the effort will be paying dividends and huge thanks to all of the volunteers who are making this initiative a great success. If you want to come along, its free and anyone is welcome, to either learn or help out. 

In an effort to showcase the club and hopefully attract new members we are holding an open day on Sunday 20th July , from 9am. This has been widely advertised and it would be helpful if we could have lots of members around to talk to potential recruits about the club, who we are, what we do and what we have to offer.

Looking further forward, we have been invited by South Windermere Sailing Club to participate in their Belle Isle long distance race on Sunday 24th August, so for those who might wish to participate , its a diary date ,with further information to follow nearer the time.
