Commodore’s April Newsletter

Dear Members,

In contrast to last year, March has been one of the wettest months on record, with the Lake regularly over the jetties.  This has led to a delay in getting the winter storage boats off the Car Park.  It is expected that the Car Park will be cleared by Easter.  Please make sure all trailers are removed.  Thanks to all of those who moved boats around to make sure that nothing got washed away.   Already, the weather is improving, with the long range weather forecast for April, being a lot drier than March.

Thanks to those who attended the “Clean up day” which was on the 18th March 2023.  Although the weather was not great, we managed to get a lot done and the grounds now look much better.  As ever, the Bacon Butties provided by Zoe were delicious and most welcome.

The Annual General Meeting on Saturday, 11th March 2023, was well attended with the Clubhouse full and many people “streamed in”.  Our retiring Secretary, Ian Smith did a sterling job for three years, and his knowledge and expertise was a major contribution to the smooth running of the Club.  At the Annual General Meeting, we welcomed Sue Heron as our new Honorary Secretary.  David Heron, our new Rear Commodore, stepped down from his position as Honorary Operations Secretary, which he had done for several years.  Our new Honorary Operations Secretary, Chris Garner, was elected at the Annual General Meeting.

Matthew Daly, our Centre Manager, has already welcomed students from Bangor University which the Royal Windermere Yacht Club has been hosting for the last five days in March.  They had a great time, in spite of the weather, a lesson to us all!  Matthew is looking forward to the forthcoming Season.  During April the Club is offering Power Boat and Refresher Courses for the Safety Boats.  Please contact Zoe for details.

The Winter has been particularly severe on our marks with many being lost or moved out of position.  During April, Steve Bewsher will be replacing them.  Please be aware that temporary marks may be used during racing.

DUTY ROSTER :

The RWYC is run by volunteers who do their best to provide a great programme.  The Duty Roster is an important part of what Members can do for the Club.  Volunteering for Assistant Race Officer and Safety Boat duties, is a great way to meet Members.  Please volunteer for as many duties as you wish.
