Adult Squad

Adult Squad runs from May to September on Sunday mornings from  10am – 12pm

What is Adult Squad and who can attend

RWYC members are all welcome to attend Adult Squad on a Sunday morning, there is no charge to club members. The Adult Squad is organised and supported by club volunteers.

Members of any level of experience are welcome to attend and can all be accommodated by the Adult Squad – ranging from those relatively new to sailing (these participants can for example crew in a boat with a more experienced member) through to very experienced sailors (who might want to practice or, for example, to tune their boats) in the knowledge that safety boats will be on the water – and for members of all levels of experience in between.

Adult Squad Sunday morning taster sessions can be arranged on request for non-club members who might be considering club membership.  These taster sessions provide an opportunity for potential new members to experience the enjoyment of sailing and these have proved popular with the parents of Junior Sailing Club participants in particular.

If you would be interested in becoming an Adult Squad participant, then please email [email protected]

When to meet

Sunday morning 10am – 12noon every week during the sailing season. Please arrive early to rig the boats and prepare for the 10am start to achieve maximum benefit from the time available.  Many of the volunteers and adult squad members participate in the club racing in the afternoon. (note 1)

Who can help

Volunteers are from ALL fleets of the club!! You just have to be willing to help provide the opportunity for other club members to go sailing on a Sunday morning; and to support them while they practice and improve their sailing skills.

If you would be interested in volunteering for Sailing or safety boat support, then please email [email protected]

Safety Boats

Club volunteers are required to drive and crew the club RIBs to provide the safety boat service for Adult Squad.  RIB drivers are required to already hold the RYA Power Boat Level 2 qualification.

Adult Squad provides an opportunity for Club members who have already gained the entry level RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification to increase time on the water and to practice and improve their skills (note 2), which can help with working towards higher qualification.

Qualifications

The Adult Squad provides an opportunity for club members to go sailing and be supported by other club members, who provide their support freely and voluntarily, but these club member volunteers are not instructors and Adult Squad does not provide training.  Participation in Adult Squad does not in itself lead to any RYA qualifications, or ‘levels’ or ‘certificates’.  If you wish to achieve RYA qualifications (through either sailing or power boat training) then further information on available courses can be found on the Sailing / Power boat training page; or can be requested by completing the Training Enquiry form or sending an email to [email protected]

What we sail at Adult Squad

The club owned boats are sailing dinghies and we are pleased to be able to provide this experience with the help of our registered charity, the RWYC Sailing Academy (note 3), through the provision of club sailing boats in the form of two Laser Bahias and three RS Fevas.  We also make use of the Club GP14 and Laser Picos.

The Adult Squad can also provide opportunities for members to experience sailing other boats on Windermere, including Flying 15s, Cruisers (yachts of various sizes with a cabin) and even the Windermere 17ft Class Yachts.  These possibilities exist because the the Adult Squad club member volunteers come from across all the RWYC fleets (see the What we Sail and Race on Windermere page for more information).
