MIRROR WINTER SERIES 2010

The first Saturday of the Windermere winter series started off with a
respectable nine boats. Wonderful amounts of sunshine but not a massive amount of wind. With the extreme weather conditions ( the wind not blowing) John Atkinson made the sensible decision to delay the racing until after lunch, giving the wind time to fill in. During this time we managed to see some ice skating swans, a first for all of us! Parents also tried to encourage their children to set up and fine tune their boats for the racing, however competitors had other ideas, deciding that they would rather have a game of pool and have a catch up with all their friends! After a good lunch the wind had finally decided to fill in. And with it gusting to a knee-trembling 3 knots we decided to set off into the unknown.
Every time John tried to lay a course the little wind there was changed
direction making a decent course to race around very difficult indeed.
Eventually however we managed to start racing with just enough wind to get us around the course. Eddie Grayson and Matthew Foster won the first race.
To our amazement the wind picked up for the second race! The course was relaid and we managed to get the boats moving nicely. The winner of the second race was Rory Nicholl and Chloe Dawson but neither of the race winners of the day would claim victory overall. The two winners of the day were Ollie White and William Hide. They had both had an excellent days racing with a second in both races giving them the highest average .
I would like thank Maiden Marine for sponsoring this event, Dan Nicholl for organising the event, John Attkinson our race officer of the day, John and Shona for all the fantastic food and the people on the safety boats. Without all these people the event would not have been able to take place. I hope to see everyone for the rest of the series, meanwhile happy sailing.
