GP FOURTEEN and RS400 OPEN MEETING

24-25 April 2010

A disappointing entry of eleven RS400s and seven GP14s took part in the meeting over the weekend. Saturday greeted the competitors with fine sunshine and very little wind. This filled in however, in time for the first two races, sailed back-to-back in the South Lake in a steady force two breeze. The RS400 fleet was dominated by Wayne and Deb Fletcher from Scaling Dam Sailing Club, who won all five races

GP Fourteen Open Meeting

A small fleet of GP14s experienced excellent sailing conditions on Windermere for the RWYC Dinghy Open Meeting over the weekend of the 24th and 25th April. Forming part of the GP Northern Bell Traveller Series the five races were dominated by local Royal Windermere Yacht Club member, Andy Tunicliffe, who won all five races and was subsequently presented with the Acland Trophy. Andy, a sail maker with Goacher Sails of Bowness, was using a new laminate mainsail, a cloth only recently approved by the GP Association which celebrates it’s 60th Anniversary this year.
Saturdays two races were sailed in glorious sunshine with a light southerly breeze. Swapping places behind Andy were Martin Brennan, a visitor from Hollingworth Lake and David Lawson from Bassenthwaite, sailing his old boat with its new Windermere owner as crew. Mixing it with these front runners were Nigel Hutchinson and Richard Thompson, both from the RWYC. James and Judith Downes, recently moved to the area from Budworth brought their boat up from South Windermere, and were also enjoying good mid fleet racing.
Sunday dawned grey and misty, but the early rain cleared and the morning race was sailed in a pleasant stiff breeze. Lunch was taken on the water and then the wind piped up a couple of notches to splendid planing conditions for the last two races.
The Royal Windermere Yacht Club celebrates its 150th Anniversary this year, is pleased to have had a long association with the GP14, and looks forward to hosting the GP Masters Championship in September.
