The Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme - what can it do for you?
RYA encourages clubs to have a closer look at the PY Scheme and discover how it might help make their racing fairer - more
This does affect us. We are now a club which runs handicap racing, both for dinghies and for cruisers. Howard and John A went to the meeting at Bolton (see - more above), where it was made clear that the RYA relies entirely on feedback from clubs to maintain the Portsmouth Yardstick scheme and update the PY numbers. It was also made clear that the numbers are not 'set in stone' and they expect us to modify them to suit our own conditions. By receiving returns annually, the RYA can use our experiences for the benefit of all. A relatively small percentage of clubs submit returns, and the process is being made simpler and will be done exclusively online.
Howard submitted a return of the Monday handicap racing results last year, and will do so again this year. It is hoped that the cruisers will do the same, especially as the RYA is desperate for as many cruiser results as possible.
Further to this, it is possible to use the scheme to derive personal handicap numbers for individual boats/helms. This has proved particularly helpful to youth training programmes by encouraging young sailors to see how they are performing, and to help them improve.
We are certainly not youthful in the Flying Fifteen fleet, but I am looking for a way of applying it to our members, and perhaps try it out on non-counting races on Thursdays. I hope it will encourage more sailors throughout the fleet to join in. The Yachts already have a kind of scheme to do this, and will no doubt be using it again this year.
I'll keep you informed...
